Gap Creek Gourmet Gift Guide 2012

Well, the Christmas trees are up and the house is decorated. Now it's time to get serious about shopping.  It's tough sometimes to figure out what to get everyone on my list. I'm sure you're the same, right?  Luckily, this year, I've been stockpiling ideas on Pinterest... bookmarking others.  And now it's time to share my loot and hopefully give you guys some good ideas for those harder to please people on your list.

Note: if you are a relative (or my husband), please quit reading and go back to whatever else you were doing or your grand surprise might be destroyed forever.  Thanks.

Flavored salts are the bomb.  We keep a jar of the Yamika Applewood Smoked Sea Salt on hand from Whole Foods at all times and it's a definite yes on the gift giving list this year, but I also found this Sriracha Salt for the hubs stocking on Etsy.

Van's Chocolates in Hendersonville, North Carolina has amazing Wine Truffles.  Tickle that wine lover's fancy with a half dozen chocolates and a bottle of red.

I found this cake tester on the Duff Goldman site and immediately bought one for someone on my list.  It's hard not to buy one of everything for myself, too.  Sigh.  I pinned it to my "I want..." board on Pinterest to satiate the need.  Maybe Santa will get one for my stocking...  PS: right now, everything on this site is 50% off!

I am a HUGE Chuck fan.  Love me some green Converse, but did you know you can personalize the heck out of these things?  I mean, you can even order them in zebra stripe with the color of trim you want and your name on the side?  Seriously.  Go check it out.  When my daughter's foot quits growing, I'm so getting her some of these.

I need this hat, and so does the baker on your list. It's a must, don't you think?

Bake Hat Orange

Okay, so Greenville has this amazing Culinary Tour.  No, I haven't been yet, but this is year number two it's on my wishlist.   You get to meet the chefs and get up close and behind the scenes at some of Greenville's hottest restaurants.  Oh, and they feed you.

Books.  Everyone still needs a book or two for Christmas.  There's something so tactile about flipping a page, dog-earing for later... Two pics for the cook on your  list are

"Stuffed: Adventures of a Restaurant Family" by Patricia Volk (a memoir and recommended at a food writing class I took recently) and..."The Secrets of the Best Chefs" by Adam Roberts (recipes, tips and tricks from a foodie/chef/blogger who is the cat's p.j.'s in my little world).

I just can't keep up with my life on my iPhone or computer.  I've tried Outlook.  I've tried reminders.  Nope.  I need a good, old fashioned written calendar.  And I am lusting over this Erin Condren life planner. You can personalize it with pics, etc, but the coolest part is the big, full spread calendar and lots of sections for keeping notes and important info.

I love a good movie that makes me want to run for the kitchen for some grub (or a tasty beverage).  Here are the top foodie movies on my list: Ratatouille, Julie and Julia, Under the Tuscan Sun, Chocolat, Big Night (on my wishlist this year), It's Complicated, Bottle Shock and Sideways.

For the 3 and unders on your list, get them the Little People Nativity Set.  I've purchased so many of these over the years that I should have bought Fisher-Price stock.  Seriously. It's part of the Christmas decor in my house, too.

Got a wife/daughter/friend who's just got everything?  This Figs and Ginger necklace is awesome.  I have one and every single time I wear it someone compliments me on it.

Okay, so I could go on and on forever.  I love the gift giving season.  It's the bomb!  I'm always open to helping out if you're stumped and need some inspiration for someone on your list. But for now, I hope this gets you started!  Happy shopping.

bookclub, creative consumption and Greenville's first food truck rodeo

My daughter totally rocked out our Cookbook book club on Monday night with a version of this cake from The Pioneer Woman Cooks Cookbook .  It was one of the best bookclub meetings yet due to the scrumptious recipes in this book.

We had stuffed mushrooms, creamy chicken enchilladas, Dr. Pepper pulled pork, chocolaty cups of creme, potatoes au gratin (I made these), hummus... I'm telling you, it was a feast! We still have room in our group if anyone is interested in joining for the new year!

I voted. Girl's gotta do what a girl's gotta do for a sticker, right?

If I don't quit eating Halloween candy... arg!  There's a huge bowl of Tootsie Rolls and Butterfinger staring at me in my kitchen and I can't bring myself to throw them away.  I'm brainstorming ways to get rid of them through consumption. The s'more I made from a mini snickers was one of the best things I've ever put in my mouth.  Yum! You gotta try it.

And on to some foodie news:
I hear Greenville's gonna have it's very first Food Truck Rodeo!  Well, a mini rodeo, anyway... According to the Neue Southern Food Truck Facebook site the Asada Truck and Pies R Squared will be joining them in the Stone's Point shopping center by Community Tap on Saturday from 5pm - 8 pm for a mini rodeo.  Greenville has to get more food trucks.  Any news on that front?

Mastering the Art of Southern Cooking

Cookbook fan like I am? Then you'll want to know about this: Fiction Addiction is hosting cookbook authors Nathalie Dupree and Cynthia Graubart for the Friday, November 30 Book your Lunch event at Soby's in downtown Greenville.  Their new book "Mastering the Art of Southern Cooking" is one you will definitely want to add to your collection. Want more info? Go here or call the bookstore at 864-675-0540.

Well, that's that folks on this rainy Wednesday.  I'm doing good to stay awake today!

Umi, Open Studios and a writing workshop

So tonight this girl is snacking on Jalapeno Poppers and Chardonnay and Ritz Crackers and Pimento Cheese.  Oh, and Halloween candy. High class, right? I'm on a cheese kick, can you tell? It's the  perfect ending to a perfect first half of my weekend.  We ate at Umi in Hendersonville again last night.  It's our new favorite sushi place. We sat at the sushi bar and watched the chefs whip and roll these beautiful plates of sushi.  It was incredible.

Then today I met my buddy and fellow blogger April Blake (The April Blake) in downtown Greenville.  We had lunch at High Cotton.

It's one of those places I've been to for events, but never to actually sit down and eat. I had duck perched on a pile of red peas with crisp green beans.  Beautiful duck. I love ordering it out because I just can't bring myself to cooking it at home.  It's a duck for goodness sake.  They are just way too cute.   Like I'd never be able to cook a guinea pig. Never.  Anyway, it was so heavenly.

We hit a few artist studios for Open Studios too. I just love Emily Clarke's paper dolls paintings.  Her studio is right on the river and I have to pop in to see what she's working on any time I am close by. I also stopped by to see J.J. Ohlinger's Subway series: Portraits of the F Train.  I contributed to the project on Kickstarter, so you could say I have a vested interest. The paintings are mesmerizing.  His attention to detail is crazy!

And I wanted to tell you all about his artist who had these quilts made with foodie print fabric: peppers, coffee, pizza, etc.  Well, there would be a picture and I would tell you who she is, but she refused to let me photograph her quilts (I did, but won't post them per her request) and she wouldn't even let me link her.  What the heck?  Clearly she does not know how cool I am, right?  And that I have amazing readers who would run right out to find her studio and see her cool quilts?  Whatever artist lady! BAH!

Then we went to a food writing class taught by one of my literary idols, Ashley Warlick.  I absolutely think she is the cats pajamas.  She has written several novels, is the editor for Edible Upcountry and wrote an absolutely beautiful piece on Greenville for my dream mag, Garden and Gun. I did very well not to fawn over her, but in that extreme effort, also forgot to get a picture with her, which I so wanted so I could share. Sigh.  I'm so bad about the picture thing.  I've got to get better.  I have no shame, so you'd think I'd remember to cheese it up and ask her for a picture, right?

Anyway. She told us about several foodie books we should check out.  I thought I'd share:
  • Stuffed By Volk, Patricia (Google Affiliate Ad) (I MUST get this one). The author writes about growing up in her family's popular steak restaurant in NYC.
  • The House on Mango Street
  • The Raw and the Cooked
  • The Gastronomical Me by MFK Fisher (Ashley Warlick's fav which I am running out to snag right away)

We also ate cake and drank coffee and wrote about cake.

What a super cool day!  I love days that make you so happy you are bursting at the seems, don't you?  And now I'm off to play with my bff.  What a super day.  Happy Saturday y'all!

a bit of Euphoria 2012 news and the monthly rip and file (aka catching up on august mags)

One of my favorite local Chefs asked me to share a little bit of Euphoria news with my peeps: Stella’s Bistro in Simpsonville, is offering one hell of a Euphoric deal!  They are giving away $40 gift cards (one per couple) to anyone that purchases two tickets to their Euphoria Wine Dinner featuring Iron Chef winner Edward Lee of 610 Magnolia in Louisville, Kentucky and Paul Fehribach of Big Jones in Chicago.  Go here for more info!

Now back to the regular programming:

To switch things up a bit, I decided to paste the stuff I ripped out mags this month into one of these cool Smash notebooks that my brother gave me.  While I'm waiting on two Apple Crisps and roasted Butternut Squash (for this recipe) to finish doing their thing in the oven, I thought I'd share .

The Movies:

I so can't wait to see To Rome With Love. Another Woody Allen film.  Yea!

And Emma Watson's next big project, The Perks of Being a Wall Flower.  I can honestly say I didn't see a single Harry Potter film so there's no chance of having post traumatic Harry syndrome during this one.

What's destined for my Tivo:
FOX's new sitcom, Ben and Kate.  I am CRAZY for We Bought a Zoo so the fact that little Maggie Jones    ("We bought a ZOOO!!!!") is supposed to be cat's pj's  in this one... I'm totally there.
The L.A. Complex. I just love a good "trying to make it in L.A. story" and am a really horrible, horrible person probably for finding some sort of enjoyment out of CW television...

I need another book to read like I need a hole in my shoe:
BUT I can't wait to get my hands on Tigers in Red Weather by Liza Klaussman and Everyday by David Levithan.

Oh the places I will go:
I have not stepped foot into Shinola at 19 Mohawk Drive in Greenville yet, but based on the very cool junk exploding out their doors, I am going to be a regular.  I gotta get there soon... and should probably stop into Community Tap too to restock the vino.  (This one's gonna be a blog post folks!)

There is apparently a bar called Speakeasy in Charleston... a hidden little place that involves a secret walkway and a tiny staircase. There is no sign.  It all sounds shady to me, but does anyone remember the cool little saiki bar on Main Street where you had to walk through another place to get there and it only seated like 12?  THAT is the reason I totally have to go find the little bar of which I speak.

In the kitchen:
Big hugs to Chef John Malik for sharing his Molasses-Brined Pork Tenderloin recipe with Edible Upcountry readers.  It's now on my to-cook list.

Uncorked:
Oregon Wines to try: Ponzi Vineyards and Thistle.  Noted.
I've been watching Bottleshock over and over again.  Tis the season.  And I am so longing to do nothing but sit in my back yard in a good chair sipping on a beautiful golden chardonnay.  Something from Boomtown, Tranche, StoneCap and Waterbrook are on my list... never tried those vineyards, you?

Smells like the Butternut Squash is almost finished.  The crisps are a smashing success! And you have some links to peruse now, don't ya?

Happy Sunday evening!  If this beautiful weather follows us through the week, it's gonna be a fantastic one folks!

The 50 Shades Tasting: A Beverage List

E.L. James has singlehandedly sparked a sexual revolution with her Fifty Shades of Grey series.  The books are hot, hot, hot!  They continue to dominate Best Seller lists, sending couples running out to stock up on S&M gear and gray ties. (Who can blame them?) And Etsy is a buzz with 50 Shades gear. (Bondage charms anyone?)  Did you know there’s even a Fifty Shades soundtrack  out?

Yes, I too am crazy obsessed, waiting with baited breath to see who will play Christian Grey and Miss Steele, and stalking the 50 Shades Facebook fan page conversations for the first hint of news. (Okay, so there may not be a script yet, but could they settle on actors already?!)

The books have sparked book clubs, specialty vacations… what’s next?  Wine clubs?  Hey, I’m game.   There’s quite a list of beverages in book series.  Mr. Grey spares no expense in the wining and dining department.  My buddy and I decided to put together a convenient (and almost comprehensive) little list so you can host your own 50 Shades tasting. (I’m waiting on my invitation!)

A Fifty Shades Tasting:

a Barossa Valley Shiraz

Alban Vineyards Estate Roussane, Edna Valley, USA label 2006

immaculate destination, dirty life and cash mobs

Immaculate Consumption
I'm about to tell you a rambling story about why I was so excited to eat at this little coffee roaster in Columbia, SC.  So I am a big folk/outsider art fan.  I ran an outsider art fest in Travelers Rest for three years and actually curated a folk art exhibit at Metropolitan Arts Council in Greenville once.  I really, really dig it.  So, one of the people I really admire is Scott Blackwell, who started Immaculate Baking Company.  You might have seen Immaculate cookies, biscuits, etc at Whole Foods.  Anyway, Scott is a huge supporter of folk artists and has an immense private collection, some of which, I personally have fondled and drooled over.  So.  He got his start at Immaculate Consumption. He started baking some there and decided to leave the coffee company.  Ta-da.  That's my story. (I know, I'm a nerd and sort of a stalker.) So that's why I wanted to go there. So when I was in town and saw it was across the street from the headquarters of SCPRT (aka new job) I ran over and got a bite.

I had a Turkey Sandwich with horseradish mayo. Pretty yum, but the place reminded me so much of the coffee shop  where I started my arts organization years back.  I hated to have to jump up and leave so quickly. If you're around Cola  (apparently what the cool people call Columbia, SC), go in for lunch.  They have a pretty expansive sandwich menu and serve breakfast too.  That's my story.

In the know...

Valslist.com
I am totally, and infinitely stoked about this new website I found this weekend in my dose of Oprah wisdom (aka Oprah mag).  So this gal Val has a website called valslist.com.  She's in her mid-50's, but the woman has her finger on the music pulse fo sho. She is like a minivan disc jockey.  Her site is full of playlists, new tune suggestions, covers, classic hits and world music you've never thought to search for.  There are concerts and videos... it's a blog meets iTunes.  There's music to get yo mamma off the couch or to chill with on a Sunday afternoon.

Did your parents (or you) love Janis Joplin, the Eagles, The Beach Boys?  With her Sounds Like... feature you can search an artist you love and she'll suggest a contemporary artist she's found whose musical stylings you might like as well.  Awesome, right?  Go check that out and share with your friends cause it's good stuff. Won't be the last you hear from Val.  She's got an App coming down the pike too.

The Dirty Life
My friend Andie talked me into reading The Dirty Life by Kristin Kimball.  It's a true story of how she gave up life in NYC, married a farmer and learned to enjoy getting down and dirty on the farm.  I was pleasantly surprised that it's a good read, but shouldn't be so shocked since she started her professional life as a writer.  That's how she met her husband - she was interviewing him for an article.  He saw her and immediately knew she was going to be his wife.  It took her a little longer to get there but she followed this farming boy on one hell of a life changing adventure. Definitely a recommended read.  Let me know how ya like it.  I'm almost finished and raring to read the next Dorothea Benton Frank novel that just came out last week.

Cash Mob!
You've heard of flash mobs by now I hope... random people standing around suddenly break out into an organized dance routine.  I'm a fan.  So now, there are cash mobs and they are a huge boost to small businesses across the country.  A local group organizes people, usually via social media, to show up at a predetermined time at a local business to spend some cash on their products or services and show the business some financial love.  RelyLocal in Greenville are getting the ball rolling here!

The next Greenville, SC  Cash Mob is this Wednesday at Miracle Hill Thrift Store in Taylors.  Go show them some love and hit up Pinterest for some repurposing ideas!

I'm out folks. Happy Monday!

TomAto. TomOto. and a few other things

Tomatoes are awesome. Yep, I'm a fan.  I'm actually attempting to grow some in my little raised box gardens this year (if I don't kill them) and it looks like I might have at least a dozen heirlooms in the coming weeks! So exciting.  I digress.  Last night I made my first tomato pie.  And it too was AWESOME!  The Fiction Addiction Cookbook Book Club girls agreed. Recipe here.

We're cooking from the Back To Basics, Y'all cookbook and it is a bitch.  It's like the old school Martha Stewart magazines where she had these ridiculous recipes with ingredients that involved a plane ride.  Seriously.  I have the entire late 1990's collection of mags to prove it.  (I'm a pre-jail Martha Stewart connoisseur - something else you probably didn't know about me.)

Last night's book club fare: caramel cake, amazing roast, jambalaya, and a really tall chocolate cake
I'll be so happy when we switch to the Southern Living Farmer's Market Cookbook next meeting.  ANYWAY! I picked the easiest thing I could find in the veggie section of the cookbook for last night's meeting and cheated my pants off.  No homemade crust.  No homemade mayonnaise, though I'll admit I was willing to try to make the mayo, but I didn't have the lemon or particular mustard needed to whip it up.  I did use basil, parsley and thyme from the garden. Yea me! Even though I thoroughly skimped on the effort, it was rockin' good. I'm making another when my tomatoes come in.

Cake & Pie

I know, I'm a complete nerd, but SOMEBODY get me some Lisa Loeb Cake and Pie glasses!  I am obsessed.  LOVE! THEM!  Anyone know Mrs. Loeb? I'm waiting...

I made reservations at Husk.  I'm about to bust at the seams with excitement.  So anxious to be Charleston bound. I have a Charleston board on Pinterest. If ya wanna check it out go here. I can't wait to try Diggity Doughnuts, swing by Roti Rolls, check out Heirloom Book Company (cookbook store), pop in and say hi at Sweeteeth Chocolate's new digs, and hit the Mount Pleasant Farmer's Market.  You can see what kind of vacation this is going to be.   Don't worry.  I'll share (photos).

I'm also newly obsessed with The Zac Brown Band. And I like putting videos on the blog. And I wish I were at the beach.  So enjoy.

I gotta go eat the omelet my daughter made me. (She actually went outside and picked the herbs, grated the Gruyere cheese and made it 100% herself... and better than I could!) She's now making cinnamon toast. Happy Tuesday.

It's Friday Y'all!

I should be working. I have an article due today, and we're heading out to dinner soon. Sigh.  Procrastination = time for a listy blog post.  Welcome to my brain.
  • The blog How Sweet It Is had this amazing recipe for Fresh Strawberry Coconut Margaritas today.  I'm so making these.
  • I had lunch with my good friends (and former TRAM supporters) Loretta and Harriet today at Green Valley Country Club. (I know, how swanky of me!) Those gals keep me in stitches.  The new owners are giving the clubhouse and grounds an overhaul.  Thanks be to God it's about time!
  • I love Belleville Outfit and can't stand it that they broke up.

Warm weather means Belleville in the afternoons and Margaritas when the hubs gets off of work.
  • I'm still reading the last book of the 50 Shades of Grey series. Honestly, they are fantastic books but I'm getting tired of reading about sex.  Yes, it is possible. I'm looking forward to switching gears and starting the new Sookie Stackhouse book this weekend! It's almost vampire season again! True Blood returns in June, I think.
  • Is anyone watching Veep?  Haven't started it yet, but it's on the Tivo mocking me.
  • Some Valley Girls (and a husband and dogs) gathered this week for an accidental cookout.  Salmon, dirty rice, Flat Tire beer (you know I'm not a beer fan, but surprisingly tolerable) and buttered rum (made with actual butter aka free lip gloss).

  • The bugs ate me alive even with bug spray. I'll look like I have full body acne all summer.  Let the itching begin.
  • Farmers' Markets kick off this weekend in the Upstate!  YEA!!!! I can't wait to see what's going on at the Traveler Rest Community Farmers' Market on Saturday morning.  Some of my other favs are the Whole Foods Market on Tuesday afternoons in Greenville and the Flat Rock Market in Flat Rock, NC on Thursday afternoons 3-6pm. Shame on me but I haven't been to the downtown Gvlle market in years.  The prices are jacked up (admittedly so by the farmers) though there is a pretty awesome selection, cooking demos, etc, from what I hear.  Okay, I promise I'll make it out and report this year.
  • I hear Upcountry Provisions is opening soon in Travelers Rest.  Inspections went well and all is a go.  They've started a cool little garden, too. The owners are giving me some swag for a blog give away.  So stay tuned.
  • I need a good source for organic strawberries.  Anyone in Upstate, SC?  (Be careful folks!  Local does not equal organic.  Wash your fruits and veggies!!!
Okay.  That wasn't exciting, was it?  I'll do better next time. Off to help my child put together a toy before she spazzes out.

It's Friday y'all!

New obsessions.

I’m about to violate some copyrights and this post itself is PG-13 and I’m recommending items/products that are not appropriate for anyone younger than say…17.  There.  You are warned.

I am newly obsessed with this:

 and this:

I’m having problems logging on to the cookbook book club site, so I thought I’d take a moment and share.  I have been waiting impatiently on the HBO series Girls to hit the air for weeks now…thanks to a sufficient buildup from my pop culture bible, Entertainment Weekly (aka “my newspaper”).   I watched it today and let me say: wow.  It is delicious!  Arty/nerdy twenty-somethings making it (well, sort of) in the big NYC. It’s not painted on, touched up perfection, it’s real and funny and real life awkward.   A new show to obsess over.  Yea me.

And the books.  Oh my... not for the prudish by any means. They are sexy and hot.  I am recommending them to all of my girlfriends… and their husbands.  Listen, this is not out of left field.  Not “oh, my goodness! I can’t believe she’s talking about that on her blog!”. They featured these books on the Today Show for pete’s sake! And apparently they are transforming women’s sex lives and marriages across the country so deal.

Here’s the coolest part: the books mention songs throughout and last night I discovered that not only are all three books available for Kindle, the book’s official website has soundtrack playlists for each book! I downloaded the songs from iTunes and listened while I read.  Holy cow! This is freaking brilliant!  What if more novels did this?!  Playlists for reading.   Brilliant.  Totally heightened the already lofty reading experience.  The wine probably helped a little too.

Read.  Have your friends read. You’re welcome.

The lure of groceries and the cookbook book club.

You know how you go to the grocery store needing just that one thing and then you find yourself packing two overstuffed bags of food in your car and wonder how you got to that point?   Today I went to  Trader Joe's for flour...

I also stopped by Fiction Addiction to pick up Basic to Brilliant Y'all: 150 Refined Southern Recipes and Ways to Dress them Up for Company by Virginia Willis.  It's the quarterly cookbook selection for the new monthly Cookbook Book Club I joined.   Every month we are assigned a category (appetizer, main course, dessert, etc) from the book, and we sign up to bring one of the dishes for everyone to share. A structured potluck, if you will. I am extraordinarily excited. Go here for more info.

While I was there, Melissa told me Dot Frank (Author of Folly Beach, Sullivan's Island, Bulls Island....) has a new book coming out mid-June.  Yea me!  I wrote an article about her last summer for Greenville Journal (click here to see it) and was able to interview her and sit by her at a luncheon... starstruck me.  I adore reading her books on our Isle of Palms trips during the summer and usually wait to actually buy her books from the Barnes and Noble on Mt. Pleasant... it's sort of a tradition now.  She's written a ton of books!

I bought Doughnuts for Amy by John Malik at the bookstore too.  I was hungry and there were donuts on the cover and the rest was a blur.  I need another book like I need a bad cold, but the author is a chef and owned 33 Liberty in Greenville, so there. He has a cool blog! I'm gonna read this book and then see if I can get some face time to share with you folks.

Here are my Trader Joe's finds.

Is anyone else out there a crazy cup person?  I have five cups in my kitchen at the moment that have touched my lips this morning alone: coffee, coffee to go, Diet Dr. pepper, water, another coffee and then an iced coffee.  What the heck?! I've only been up, operational and actually physically in my house for four hours today! Must work on this problem.

The iced coffee is incredible. Trader Joes had these new instant coffee packets, pre-sweetened with creamer and a bit of mocha in there.    Mix with 4oz of hot water (super sweet but incredibly tasty alone..then adapted)...mix in 1/2 cup of milk and fill with ice.  Oh my. Seriously gooooood iced coffee drink and will now be a staple in my house during summer.

I've heard raves about the Speculoos Cookie Butter.  Raving wasn't good enough. It's has the texture of peanut butter (but isn't made of peanuts), but tastes like cinnamon graham crackers...  There should have been an emergency announcement broadcast on every station in the world that this stuff is AMAZING!

Last thing, I promise.  Milk Chocolate Covered Potato Chips.  I was inspired to make these myself years ago after seeing them in a chocolate shop in downtown Easley, South Carolina. They were fairly easy and so sweetandsaltilicious.  For a store bought substitute, these are pretty good.  Tons of smooth chocolate and salty enough, but the taters are lost in the thick coating... needs thicker or larger chips.  I am taking these with me to see Casablanca on the big screen tonight. (Yes Kathy, I will share.)

That's it!  Your must have list at Trader Joe's just grew by a mile.

I hope to see some of you at the Fiction Addiction Cookbook Book Club!
